"The Sound of two Mittens Clapping"

The Mitten's are probably the two most famous and recognizable buttes in Monument Valley. They have stood in the background of several John Ford movies as well as many movies made by other directors.

From left to right, the Buttes in this image are named Left Mitten, Right Mitten and Merrick Butte.

While these sentinels of Monument Valley never move in relation to one another there is a short time each year when in a sense they do "come together" just before sunset. The Shadow of the Left Mitten fits entirely on the Right mitten. Hence my name "The Sound of Two Mittens Clapping".
